Pippin @World & Atmark Wiki

Pippin Kickstart (ピピンキックスタート) is an unofficial bootloader disc that allows an unmodified consumer Pippin console to load an unauthenticated CD-ROM, and support booting from external SCSI devices.[1]

Features[]

The disc functions similarly to Swap Magic and is designed to circumvent authentication, allowing an unsigned volume to boot. The program displays the ROM version of the console and amount of memory detected before ejecting itself and looking for a candidate with a compatible System Folder to boot from.[1]

It only works on consumer consoles with Pippin ROM revision 1.0, 1.2, or 1.3. Pippin prototypes with developer ROMs are not supported. On revision 1.3 consoles that do not check CD-ROMs for authentication, Pippin Kickstart will allow it to boot from an external SCSI device, which is normally not permitted.[1]

Releases[]

The disc image of version 1.0 was first released on June 30, 2019 under GNU General Public License v2.[1][2]

Version 1.0.1 was released 2 days later, with improvements to RAM detection while reducing memory usage.[3] This version was demonstrated with two networked Pippin @WORLD consoles at VCF West 2019 in Mountain View, California.[4]

Version 1.1 was released on February 9, 2021, adding some graphic effects and the ability for older consoles with 1.0 ROMs to recognize SCSI devices other than the internal CD-ROM.[5]
